Hydrogen Safety in New Applications

Hydrogen is not a new molecule, and has been known to industrial actors for decades.
The development of hydrogen projects, particularly for mobility, has led to a significant growth in the industry and the arrival of new actors. All stakeholders, both old and new, have a collective responsibility to master the risks and regulations in order to avoid an industrial accident that could be detrimental to the industry's development. To this end, Engie, TotalEnergies, Bureau Veritas, and the ENSOSP (National School for Firefighter Officers) have developed a unique training program that provides knowledge to all industry actors.
This training combines knowledge from both private and public sectors to teach about the risks and regulations of hydrogen. The training is particularly valuable as it includes practical workshops. The key strengths of this program are its ability to enable a heterogeneous audience (technicians, engineers, researchers, politicians, and business leaders) to understand the regulatory context and risks. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to experience practical situations, such as being exposed to real hydrogen flames at 700 bar, as well as those of LPG and CNG, to understand the behavior of these flames. Thus, when participants discover that a hydrogen flame is invisible to the naked eye, it leads to a real awareness of the specificity of this molecule.
Educating about risks is essential for the industry. The objective is not to frighten, but rather to understand that risks exist, and that they can be qualified and quantified in order to be mastered.
