Competence Is the Key to Safe Hydrogen

Problem Statement

Over many decades of trial and error humans have learnt how to interact with hydrocarbon equipment. But Hydrogen is a relatively new fuel, growing in importance. And we need to build in safe operation now.

Why are 90% of written standards related to operating and maintenance of equipment, but only 10% define related behaviors?

Existing standards define how Hydrogen equipment is designed, maintained, and operated, but what about the people? Most organizations have clear training, safety, and operating standards, but very few have an active strategy for managing competency to assure everyone is performing to those standards.

Purpose

The purpose of this session is to discuss the importance of managing human competence to mitigate risks in the expanding Hydrogen industry. Site-specific competencies must be managed to assure safety of people and the environment.

Our Experience

Working with clients around the world we have the experience. The most effective companies integrate well-defined, role and site-specific competencies into their entire Talent Management strategy:

  • Attract qualified team members
  • Provide clear expectations
  • Identify knowledge and behavioral gaps
  • Increase workplace and environmental safety
  • Clarify targeted training needs
  • Assure workforce capability
  • Ensure organizational sustainability

The Cost of Doing Nothing

If the Hydrogen Industry chooses not to apply lessons-learned from Energy’s industry-leading practices, competency will be an unwanted focus after the next major incident. But, with foresight and planning, we can transition competencies as well as skills and technologies, from hydrocarbons to hydrogen from the get-go.
