At every conference, meeting, and symposium there seem to be more and more discussions amongst leadership on how existing utilities can transform for the clean energy revolution. Numerous energy utilities and corporations have made net zero, 1.5°C, and sustainability pledges. For natural gas utilities, there has been an emphasis towards hydrogen as a possible decarbonized solution. Many utilities have joined collaborative industry organizations to evaluate hydrogen compatibility within existing and future gas systems. However, a notable gap exists translating basic science and decarbonization goals into meaningful pilots that go beyond a single demonstration.

This talk will explore how to couple existing industry knowledge with decarbonization goals to develop a successful pilot. An emphasis will be placed on a systematic approach so that hydrogen pilot projects today can build the cornerstone of a future energy utility tomorrow!
