The quest for a fundamental upgrade in chemical operator qualification methods

Authors

At last year's presentation we discussed the benedictions of digitally enhancing the chemical operators' learning experience in the process of getting acquainted to a new production plant. Enhanced Reality technology, described in (1), (2), (3), is the only solution to offer simulation capabilities and photorealism at the same time and therefore considered as the state of the art to achieve this.

Focus was on avoiding human error in the context of process safety as a primary motivation. While this remains highly relevant, we will now provide a broader perspective and share our experience on what drives key stakeholders in chemical operations to start looking into VR, AR, XR solutions for training. We will present several examples for real use cases in chemical and petrochemical industry and how these were translated into highly viable business cases.

Still, why do so many digital initiatives fail? Achieving the full potential of a project involves proper preparation and smooth project execution. However, this is not enough: the adoption process deserves special attention as well - as any other change process it may come with pitfalls. We share insight on the key success factors for successful implementation that we found in our practice.
