The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and its Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS), together with China Chemical Safety Association (CCSA) and the National Center for International Cooperation in Work Safety (SAWS) hosted the largest regional process safety conference to date in Ningbo, China, on September 23 and 24. The conference drew more than 700 delegates, representing industry, government and academia, from around the world.
Huashan Sun, vice minister of SAWS, officially opened the symposium by noting that it was organized around the theme of “promoting chemical process safety management and strengthening corporate safety infrastructure.” Attendees shared new experiences, new science and technology, and new achievements in chemical process safety management (PSM), with a goal of optimizing chemical process safety management and the safe development of the chemical industry.
Louisa Nara, technical director of CCPS, a keynote speaker, invited attendees to join CCPS’s Vision 20/20 Challenge. She called for responsible collaboration, globally, among governments, academia, industry and communities, to raise risk awareness and prevent incidents that result in the loss of lives, destruction of assets, and damage to our environment.
The conference included 14 featured lectures and 64 technical presentations covering risk analysis and management, emergency response, mechanical integrity, process safety management key performance indicators, and process safety culture.
The first day of the conference included a Chemical Engineering Safety Technology and Equipment Exhibition, where CCPS and The China University of Petroleum unveiled the Chinese-language version of the CCPS book, “Incidents that Define Process Safety.”
The event also offered two pre-conference workshops, CCPS’s Risk-based Process Safety and Safety Instrumented System.
About AIChE
AIChE is a professional society of 50,000 chemical engineers in 100 countries. Its members work in corporations, universities and government using their knowledge of chemical processes to develop safe and useful products for the benefit of society. Through its varied programs, AIChE continues to be a focal point for information exchange on the frontiers of chemical engineering research in such areas as energy, sustainability, biological and environmental engineering, nanotechnology and chemical plant safety and security. More information about AIChE is available at www.aiche.org.
About CCPS
CCPS is a not-for-profit corporate membership organization within AIChE, with over 180 members, that identifies and addresses process safety needs in the chemical, pharmaceutical and petroleum industries. CCPS brings together manufacturers, government agencies, consultants, academics and insurers to lead the way in improving process safety. Members, working in project subcommittees, define and develop useful, time-tested guidelines that have practical applications that run the gamut from human factors to qualitative and quantitative risk analysis to security vulnerability to inherently safety design. With more than 100 publications, CCPS is at the forefront of efforts to improve process safety performance. More information about AIChE is available at www.aiche.org/ccps.
