The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and its Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) hosted the 2nd Global Summit on Process Safety in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on November 3 to 5. The Global Summit, themed “CCPS Process Safety Vision 20/20,” drew more than 350 delegates from more than 75 organizations, along with 10 sponsors and exhibitors from industries, including oil and gas, chemical and pharmaceutical.
Honorary Minister of Human Resources, Malaysia, YB Dato’ Sri Richard Riot Anak Jaem, officially inaugurated the Summit with conference co-chairs YBhg Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim, vice chancellor and chief executive officer of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, and Shakeel Kadri, Executive Director of CCPS. Kadri introduced the “CCPS 30th Anniversary Film” recognizing Chemical Engineering, Process Safety and CCPS — http://www.aiche.org/ccps/safety. During his video address Kadri encouraged participants to use ideas from the conference to improve process safety implementation in their facilities. Kadri also thanked both UTP and PETRONAS management for playing a leadership role in supporting the event and organizing the program.
In his opening speech, Honorary Minister Sri Richard Riot Anak Jaem remarked, “I believe the 2nd CCPS Global Summit on Process Safety will be an excellent platform that brings together experts from around the world, together with the government and industry, to determine a more sustainable future. This event should be continued to nurture process safety knowledge and contribute towards capability development.”
During her introductory speech “Vision 20/20: A Call to Action,” Louisa A. Nara, CCPS’s technical director thanked PETRONAS senior management for “walking the talk” of process safety, and their employees for implementing and exhibiting characteristics of great process safety – a core value for CCPS’ Vision 20/20. “All of us here today have one goal – to improve process safety performance in order to save lives and protect assets and the environment.”
“The summit exceeded our expectations,” CCPS Asia-Pacific Manager Umesh Dhake said. “The Asia-Pacific region is a key constituency as CCPS continues implementing process safety vision 20/20 with the objective of eliminating significant process safety incidents.”
The summit offered 46 technical presentations, 6 plenary addresses, 3 panel discussions and a student poster competition. Forty attendees took advantage of two pre-conference workshops.
The summit also included an invitation-only Leadership Forum, where senior managers focused on areas for collaboration and shared experiences on driving process safety within their organizations. These leaders than presented recommendations they developed on culture, communications — “leading from the top,” and becoming a learning organization to the delegates in a call for action.

About CCPS
CCPS is a not-for-profit corporate membership organization within AIChE that identifies and addresses process safety needs in the chemical, pharmaceutical and petroleum industries. CCPS brings together manufacturers, government agencies, consultants, academics and insurers to lead the way in improving process safety. Members, working in project subcommittees, define and develop useful, time-tested guidelines that have practical applications that run the gamut from human factors to qualitative and quantitative risk analysis to security vulnerability to inherently safety design. With more than 100 publications, CCPS is at the forefront of efforts to improve process safety performance. More information about AIChE is available at www.aiche.org/ccps.
