Tony Downes

Mr. A.M. (Tony) Downes is an independent PSM consultant. Mr. Downes has more than 40 years of industrial experience in operations and PSM with DuPont, Bayer, Westlake, FMC, and Honeywell. He has led over 100 PHAs and conducted over 100 incident investigations. Before retiring to form Downes Process Safety LLC, he was the Global Process Safety Advisor at Honeywell Performance Materials. He has led the development and implementation of PSM programs for more than 30 years, rising from site level to corporate director level.

Mr. Downes is a recognized expert in Digitalization to improve Process Safety. Before leaving Honeywell, he acted as system architect for Honeywell’s work on process safety digitalization for a major Middle Eastern national oil company.

Mr. Downes has been recognized as one of the first CCPS-Certified process safety engineers and is also a TUV-Certified functional safety engineer. He also participated in many PSM audits at a variety of facilities and processes.

Mr. Downes is active in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers’ Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) as an Emeritus Member and serves on the organizing committee for the joint CCPS/EPSC Conference on “Process Safety & Big Data/Digitalization” as well as on the Process Safety Beacon Committee. He has published many papers and presentations related to PSM in the United States and internationally and has co-authored three books on various aspects of PSM.

Mr. Downes holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Engineering) degree from the University of Ottawa, Canada.
