Functional Safety Management is that part of Process Safety Management which is responsible for ensuring the right operation of protective systems.
We talk, "Functional Safety" when safety depends on proper functioning of an electrical (E), Electronic (E) and programmable electronic systems (PE) (short: System E / E / PES). Also known as Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)
Functional Safety allows us to deal with the "highest risk" inherent in a particular process and has been an important advance in both the methodology, as in philosophy for dealing with technological risk.
The proper functioning of a safety instrumented system not only depends on the hardware and the software engineering itself, but also the functional safety management system implemented on the project covering specification, design, construction, operation and maintenance.
No matter how good the stand-alone products are designed for safety, They are of little benefit and if not used correctly in the specific application. The development of the company "Safety Culture" is a key driver for the sustainability of business. Including the disciplines of Occupational Health and Safety as well as the Functional Safety of process protective systems.
This paper illustrates the importance on the development of a Functional Safety Management System (FSMS), according to IEC 61508 / IEC 61511.This development has been the first and only FSMS Certified by an independent third-party certification body such as TUV Rheinland in the Americas. The development and use of this FSMS ensures that safety projects are implemented with the appropriate processes, relevant competent professionals and at the right time.
