"Zero
Accidents Program - Building a Safe Environment in a Great Place to Work"
Abstract
Management of change
is a consistent concept in the industries nowadays, with several examples of
success. However, business restructurings may affect Safety Performance, even
using the right planning and communication tools. Recognizing this risk, a
program was developed to enhance Safety Culture. By the end of 2008, focus
changed very quickly from production volume to low cost operation, and it was
necessary to adapt to the new scenario. On the other hand, it was even more
important to keep teams engaged to Safety, reducing incidents rate and
increasing people satisfaction at work. This paper discusses the approach used
at a Monsanto's Brazilian facility. The project steps are:
·
Diagnosis:
Deep analysis of incidents investigations, root causes and corrective actions.
Benchmark studies, Literature research.
·
Engaging
People: Brainstorm sessions to discuss safety.
·
Launching:
vision development; communication; people commitment.
·
Implementation
& Follow-up: tracking actions and
results.
The main outcomes of the project
were a significant reduction on accidents rate and severity as well as an increase
on employees' engagement to the new scenario. Even passing through its most
challenging period since start up, Safety Culture has been enhanced and the
employees contributed to get Monsanto recognized as a Great Place to Work.
