Introduction

Since early 2010, Pan American Energy has implemented the evaluation of fitness for service with the highest level of analysis, the Finite Element Method. This has allowed us to make models to analyze structural and acoustic behavior of critical equipment under various operating conditions and status, and even simulate events.

Objectives:

The safety of people, equipment, facilities and environment.

How come:

  • Analyzing equipment or facilities that demonstrate a dubious or limited operating condition.

  • Using the best technology available for analysis, forming a team with specialists to make substantiated assessments, providing engineering to ensure problem resolution.

  • Increasing experience in assessment, analysis and problem solving.

    Case: Analysis and resolution of acoustic-mechanical problems in multistage reciprocating compressors HP 4500

    Objective:

    Determine the source of the vibrations; develop a solution technically applicable, with the least operational impact, and economically efficient.

    Plan:

  • Identify sources of pulses, propagation of these, and discrimination of the origin of the vibration.

  • Develop models that represent the current condition, mechanical and acoustic linking.

  • Determine the most critical parts that need to improve their condition

  • Determine impact of proposed improvements via numerical simulation.

  • Develop engineering necessary improvements

  • Implement

    Challenge:

    • Too little experience in acoustic phenomena.
    • Numerical models with high complexity.
    • Achieving sufficiently representative models with limited computing resources.

Results:

    • A representative model of the current condition to differentiate the criticality of each piece of equipment was achieved.
    • Developed, analyzed and verified through equipment modifications of this method
    • It could prompt action to implement differentiated most sensitive parts.
    • The level of breakage and vibration was reduced
    • Was broadened operational flexibility allowing the team to achieve higher load
    • A new experience in resolution of acoustic-structural problems was acquired.
