31st Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) | AIChE

The Center for Chemical Process Safety International Conference (CCPS) is one of four parallel symposia that comprise The Global Congress on Process Safety (GCPS). Organized by volunteers from industry and academia, the CCPS conference promotes process safety by identifying emerging process safety issues and advancing leading process safety management practices. It is dedicated to managing process safety systematically, locally, regionally and internationally.  The conference agenda will consist of nine sessions, each with three 25-minute presentations. Papers are selected by session chairs based on an abstract of 100-200 words. The abstract must offer a brief account of the contents, conclusions, and the relevance to the topic area. Submitted abstracts must include the author, their affiliation, full address, email, and phone number. The papers will be published in the GCPS proceedings. Abstracts will be submitted online, by October 15, 2015.

The 31st CCPS International Conference will again primarily focus on Vision 20/20… what is it that industry leaders are doing and implementing to be successful with regards to the elimination of Process Safety incidents.  This year the focus will shift from introducing the Vision 20/20 model to a focus which is more based on implementation and learning as leading companies share from their journey… Vision 20/20 looks into the not-too-distant future to describe how great process safety is delivered when it is collectively and fervently supported by industry, regulators, academia, and the community worldwide.

Committed Culture 

This session will be focused on the Vision 20/20 Industry Tenet of Committed Culture.  In a Committed Culture, executives involve themselves personally, managers and supervisors drive excellent execution every day, and all employees maintain a sense of vigilance and vulnerability. Papers on this topic will highlight best practices in which executives, supervisors, managers, engineers, operators and mechanics enable and encourage a committed culture which supports safe and reliable operations. 

Within Committed Culture three areas of specific focus will be looked at:

  1. Creating Felt Leadership

Senior executives personally and visibly lead Process Safety.

  1. Obtaining Operational Discipline

Operators and mechanics diligently follow procedures and speak up when they suspect a problem or see an opportunity for improvement, while supervisors and managers verify work is done properly, intervene to correct situations, and openly communicate negative news to management.

  1. Maintaining a Sense of Vulnerability

Part of doing “the right things, the right way” shift after shift, day in and day out is recognize that “it could happen here…”

Implementing, managing, and monitoring programs associated with the Vision 20/20 Industry Tenets

In addition to the focus on Committed Culture, the Vision 20/20 model looks at 4 additional industry tenets which describe the behaviors and practices associated with Process Safety excellence.  This session will focus on the steps taken, programs implemented, best practices, and success stories associated with these other industry tenets.

  1. Vibrant Management Systems

Vibrant Management Systems are ingrained throughout the organization and readily adapt to the organization’s varying operations and risks. 

  1. Disciplined Adherence to Standards

Disciplined Adherence to Standards means using recognized design, operations, and maintenance standards, which are followed every time, all the time, and are continually improved.

  1. Intentional Competency Development

Intentional Competency Development ensures that all employees who impact process safety are fully capable of meeting the technical and behavioral requirements for their jobs.

  1. Enhanced Application of Lessons Learned

Enhanced Application & Sharing of Lessons Learned communicates critical knowledge in a focused manner that satisfies the thirst for learning.

Developing, fostering, and partnering with non-industry stakeholders through the Vision 20/20 Societal Themes

In addition to the focus on Industry Tenets, the Vision 20/20 model looks at 4 Societal Themes which broadly describes the collaboration and outreach needed.  This session will focus on the steps taken, programs implemented, best practices, and success stories associated with these societal themes.

  1. Enhanced Stakeholder Knowledge

Enhanced Stakeholder Knowledge promotes understanding of risk among all stakeholders, including the public, government, and industry leaders.

  1. Responsible Collaboration

Responsible Collaboration is a cooperative relationship among regulatory and investigative authorities, labor organizations, communities, research institutions, universities, and industries.

  1. Harmonization of Standards

Harmonization of Standards for the safe design, operation, and maintenance of equipment streamlines practices, eliminates redundancy, and cooperatively addresses emerging issues. 

  1. Meticulous Verification

Meticulous Verification by knowledgeable independent parties helps companies evaluate their process safety programs from an independent perspective.

Human Factors 

(Joint with Spotlights Track)

The topic of Human Factors is becoming increasingly discussed as industry tries to better understand and manage the interactions among humans and other elements of a system. Papers on this topic will highlight current work or best practices on human factors (or error) associated with job/task factors, individual behavior, and the organization. This session is under spolight's track and co-sponsored by CCPS.

Papers will provide a summary of the updated or novel aspects of the project and serve as a communications tool for the associated activities or publications.  Additionally, papers from individuals which support proposed or recently initiated projects could be accepted.

Case Histories

(GCPS Joint Case Histories Session on Wednesday Afternoon of the conference)

Reviews of process safety incidents provide valuable learning opportunities.  This session invites papers to help understand the causes and lessons learned from incidents in the industry with an emphasis on events that have helped define and develop the process safety field over the years.
