CIUDEN Centre for Technological Development of CCS. Results and Proposal for Future Work

One of the most relevant European technological development initiatives focused on Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) is the CIUDEN Project, is supported by the Spanish Government through the Foundation Ciudad de la Energía (CIUDEN) and partially funded by de European Commission trough the European Economic Program for Recovery . CIUDEN investigates CCUS in two main facilities: Carbon Capture and Transport at the Technologies Development Centre for CO2 Capture (es.CO2) and Carbon Storage at the CO2 Storage Technology Development Plant.
The es.CO2 Centre, located in Cubillos del Sil (NW Spain), incorporates the world’s most advanced equipment for the development of oxycombustion based on two combustion technologies: pulverized coal (PC) and circulating fluidized bed (CFB). CIUDEN CO2 Storage Technology Development Plant, based in Hontomin (N Spain), allows carrying out experiments in real scale in saline formations to develop CO2 storage knowledge. These installations are actually providing real data for the design, construction and operation of a future 300 MWe power plant based in a CFB supercritical oxycombustion boiler with dense phase CO2 transport pipeline and final underground CO2 storage in a on-shore deep saline geological formation.
This paper will describe CIUDEN facilities, aims, R&D&D actual portfolio totalizing 11 international R&D projects, and some of the results achieved so far. Data and experiences collected provide scientific and technological knowledge as well as public and investors’ confidence. All these are key factors for the design and operation of competitive large-scale facilities, covering the complete carbon capture, transport and storage chain.
