Creating a Low Carbon Industry Future: Innovative Use of Waste Gases to Make Sustainable Fuels and Chemicals

LanzaTech’s core gas fermentation technology is the foundation for a transformational change in how we approach carbon reuse and sequestration. LanzaTech’s proprietary gas-to-liquid platform produces ethanol and high value chemicals from a variety of gas resources, industrial flue gases from steel mills and processing plants, typically flared or used as a source of fuel; syngas generated from any biomass resource (such as municipal biowaste, organic industrial waste, and agricultural waste); coal derived syngas; and reformed natural gas, through biological fermentation. LanzaTech’s proprietary microbe has demonstrated the ability to convert a wide range of relatively “dirty” gas streams into alternative transport fuels and commodity chemicals. The robust characteristics of this microbe and scalable bioreactor technology enable LanzaTech to deploy production facilities almost anywhere there is a source of CO2 or CO– with or without H2.

By capturing CO2, which is available in large volumes, from these gas streams, LanzaTech presents attractive economics to beneficially reuse the captured carbon by sequestration into commodity chemicals and reuse into alternative fuels.  Production of competitive acetic acid, for example, presents an opportunity to produce lipids which can be further processed into alternative fuels.

Integration of LanzaTech’s technology into a number of industrial facilities, such as steel mills, oil refineries and other industries that emit carbon rich gases will enable industry to see carbon as an opportunity rather than a liability. Reducing a facilities carbon footprint will be inextricably linked to adding value to their overall process.
