Impactful Patent Recognition

This program recognizes AIChE members who have been granted patents from the US patent office resulting in significant impact on business or society. The focus is on patents that are still in-force and in use that are creating value. Recognition comes with a free one-year Management Division membership, an invitation to the Division dinner at the next AIChE Spring Meeting and a commemorative plaque. Winners will also be invited to provide a short presentation of their work at the AIChE Spring Meeting if selected.

Administration

• The recognition program is administered by the AIChE Management Division Awards Committee, which reviews all applications and recommends nominees for confirmation by the AIChE Management Division’s Board.
• A complete nomination package using this form must be submitted, including a short description of the patent, the value it generates and a pdf copy of the patent itself. Value can include monetary value, societal value, contribution to the field, market advantage created, efficiency improvement attained, productivity improvement attained, design patents, new molecules, new processes, etc.
• Submittal of the nomination form and supporting materials shall be made by email to PatentRecognition@aichemgmt.org.
• The recognition will generally be presented annually but only if qualified nominations have been received. This determination is solely at the discretion of the Management Division Awards Committee and the Management Division Board. Plaques are presented at a special session, luncheon or dinner meeting held at an AIChE Meeting (typically the Spring Meeting).
• Patent recognition appears in member publications, meeting program books, and website listings, newsletters, social media and blog postings.

Criteria

• Demonstrated creation of value attributed to the granted and in-force patent. Value can include monetary value, societal value, contribution to the field, market advantage created, efficiency improvement attained, productivity improvement attained, design patents, new molecules, new processes, etc. It does not include defensive or business method patents.
• Nominees are required to be a member of AIChE at the time of nomination. Only one AIChE member per nomination. Multiple nominations for the same patent are acceptable provided each nominee is a named inventor and is an AIChE member. Only one recognition per inventor per year.
