Colin S. ‘Chip’ Howat is the principal associate of C. S. Howat & Associates (HowatRisk.com), the consulting firm he established in 1979. This firm emphasizes plant performance, process hazards, process risk and process design/modeling analysis. The firm has clients in the petrochemical, food, crop science, process simulation and litigation fields.
He was on the University of Kansas faculty from 1981 to 2009 where his teaching emphasis was process design and process safety. He developed the Process Safety syllabus at KU before Bhopal. His outcomes evolved as the industry events, industry practices, PSM regulations, etc. evolved. His research focused on teaching effectiveness, process plant performance, phase equilibria thermodynamics and data analysis.
He was awarded numerous department, school and university teaching awards. He is a Fellow of the AIChE and is a member of the Fellows Council. He is the liaison to SAChE from the Education Division of AIChE. He has over 175 publications, workshops and presentations.
He is director of the USA Cycling Race Mechanics Clinic at the Olympic Training Center and has been a USA Team mechanic to eight World Mountain Bike Championships.
