Dr Fernandes received her bachelor’s and doctorate degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She also attended the University of Sao Paolo in Brazil. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Brown University in Providence, RI, from 2020 to 2022, and was also an instructor for the School of Engineering at Brown in 2021. Fernandes earned a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and a Bridge to the Doctorate Fellowship. She also received two first-place presentation awards from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Her research focuses on 3-D printing of 2-D nanomaterials (e.g., graphene and other materials) for biomedical/biosensor and energy applications, and the controlled release of intercalates.
