Dr. Zalosh’s teaching, research, and mentorship in industrial fire safety were foundational to the field, significantly advancing knowledge and best practices. He authored the definitive textbook "Industrial Fire Protection Engineering" and co-authored the AIChE Center for Chemical Process Safety’s "Guidelines for Safe Handling of Powders and Bulk Solids." His peers recognized his contributions by honoring him as a Fellow of both the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Beyond academia, Dr. Zalosh applied his expertise to safety standards and guidelines through organizations such as Underwriters Laboratory and the National Fire Protection Association. His work on hazards related to flammable gases and combustible dusts for the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) expanded the knowledge base for future safety strategies and practices.
Dr. Zalosh also cherished his role in serving the Boston Fire Department, which honored him with the prestigious Fire Commissioner’s Award for Outstanding Civilian Service, recognizing him as “a true friend and invaluable resource.”
Dr. Zalosh was a founding member of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hydrogen Safety Panel, which was formed in 2003 to provide expertise and guidance on safety issues related to hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. He played a crucial role in the Panel's success by assessing safety aspects, identifying potential risks, and recommending mitigation strategies for various projects.
