JASON JAMES, PhD, is a managing scientist in the Environmental and Earth Sciences practice at Exponent, Inc. (15375 SE 30th Place, Suite 250, Bellevue, WA 98007; Email: jamesj@exponent.com). He consults in the areas of data analysis, natural carbon sequestration, chemical fate and transport, and lifecycle analysis. He has investigated the GHG reductions from substituting biogenic charcoal in steel production, and the soil carbon losses and sequestration associated with the generation of biofuels from forests. His published research includes meta-analyses describing the effect of forest harvesting practices on soil carbon storage, a systematic review of the effects of forest thinning and prescribed fire on total ecosystem carbon, and a narrative review of the influence of forest management activities on soil carbon. He has a PhD in biogeochemistry and MS in soil science from the Univ. of Washington. He is also an Associate Professional Soil Scientist.
