Dr. Jessica Durham Macholz is a Materials Scientist in the Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory. She is part of the Materials Recycling R&D group working in the Materials Engineering Research Facility (MERF). She is a lead investigator in DOE’s ReCell Center for advanced battery recycling where she investigates safe and cost effective direct recycling processes for lithium-ion batteries, specifically with respect to cell pre-processing, cathode/anode separation, and cathode/cathode separation.
Durham’s research also focuses on conducting process R&D and scale up of materials for energy storage applications through collaborations with industry, academia, and other national laboratories. She is a current participant in Argonne’s Launchpad Program, designed to provide motivated early- and mid-career researchers with enhanced training and mentoring for developing multimillion-dollar sponsored research programs. As part of the Launchpad Program, her team is developing and promoting emerging manufacturing technologies that address some of the commercialization challenges currently limiting materials for solid-state batteries.
