John H. Lienhard is the Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT. His contributions include fundamental studies of the thermodynamics of desalination, of liquid jet impingement cooling, and of transport in thermally stratified flows, as well as applied research and technology development in thermal and membrane‐based desalination, extremely high heat flux engineering, and temperature control of electronics test equipment. His work has resulted in more than 250 peer‐reviewed papers, several textbooks, 150+ invited talks around the world, and many awards. He holds dozens of issued and pending patents, most of which have been licensed for industrial use. He has directly supervised 75+ graduate theses at MIT, and those students have gone on to drive innovation through start‐ups, industrial careers, and academic positions. He is a co‐founder of Gradiant Corporation, which is an emerging industry leader in purification of difficult industrial wastewater that now operates in five countries. Professor Lienhard is the past recipient of the ASME Edward F. Obert Award (outstanding paper in thermodynamics, 2019); Best Paper Award, the AMTA/AWWA Membrane Technology Conf (2019); and the ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award (2015). He is a fellow of ASME and AAAS.
