John P. O'Connell, PhD is Professor Emeritus at the Univ. of Virginia and is currently a Research Scholar in Residence at the California Polytechnic State Univ. in San Luis Obispo, CA (Email: jpo2x@virginia.edu). As a faculty member for 47 years at the Univ. of Florida and the Univ. of Virginia, his research and teaching focused on thermodynamics, properties modeling, and molecular theory for chemical process design and simulation. O’Connell coauthored six books, including Computer Calculations for Multicomponent Vapor-Liquid and Liquid-Liquid Equilibria; Properties of Gases and Liquids, 5th Ed.; Thermodynamics: Fundamentals for Applications; and The PPEPPD Conferences 1977–2013. He earned a BA from Pomona College, a BS and an SM from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a PhD from Univ. of California, Berkeley. He was Chair of the AIChE Fellows from 2004 to 2014 and served on the AIChE Board of Directors from 2015 to 2017.
