Martin is a graduate in psychology with over 20 years experience in human factors and safety management in relation to major hazards and complex systems. He also has two Master of Engineering degrees in both human factors and in process safety. Prior to joining Woodside last year, Martin played a key role in developing human factors within the UK Health & Safety Executive (UK HSE). He was a Specialist Inspector for 12 years, regulating human, management and organisational aspects on over 120 major hazard sites, both on and offshore, including planned inspection, incident investigation, safety report/safety case assessment, provision of expert evidence and formal enforcement. He was most recently a specialist in HSE's Offshore Division providing human and organisational factors input to interventions on a range of offshore installations, including production platforms, mobile drilling units and FPSOs. Martin’s current role involves educating and supporting senior management teams, individual managers, site leadership teams and operational personnel to actively lead improvements in Woodside's approach to human factors. Martin is a Fellow of the UK Institute of Ergonomics & Human Factors; and was a non-Executive Director of the IEHF for 10 years. In 2012 he was awarded the William Floyd Award by the IEHF for outstanding and innovative contributions to ergonomics and human factors.
