Prof. Ulrich Krause has dedicated his career to improving safety in chemical plants around Germany. After completing his studies and Ph.D. at the University of Dresden, he spent 20 years in research and leadership positions at the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) before joining the Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg as the director of the Institute of Apparatus and Environmental Technology and chair of Plant Design and Safety. His research has made valuable contributions to understanding the formation and propagation of flames and explosions and to developing processes and apparatuses for controlling the risk of rapid, exothermic reactions. As a professor, he initiated the international master program Process Safety and Environmental Engineering to provide the chemical and process industry with much needed specialists with an understanding of both process engineering and safety.
