Wilfried Weber is professor of synthetic biology at the University of Freiburg. He studied in Germany, France and Switzerland and earned his PhD with Martin Fussenegger at ETH Zurich. He established his own research group at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering at ETH Zurich prior to being appointed as full professor at the University of Freiburg. The research of Wilfried Weber focusses on the intersection of synthetic biology and materials sciences towards the development of interactive cells and materials systems with applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering and point-of-care-suitable analytical devices. The work of Wilfried Weber was recognized by multiple awards such as the election as Young Scientist by the World Economic Forum or a Starting Grant and Proof-of-Concept grants by the European Research Council ERC. Since 2019 Wilfried Weber is a founding scientific co-director of the Research Centre CIBSS, the Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies established in the frame of the German Excellence Strategy. Wilfried Weber authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications.
