Workshops
1. Women Undergraduates Workshop
This workshop focused on career choices for undergraduate students. Graduate students from various schools shared their experiences on application processes, selecting a school and an adviser, fellowship applications, career development activities, and life-work balance. This workshop also included a talk on interviewing skills, and a panel discussion on Academia vs Industry vs National Labs as career choices.
2. Women Graduate Students and Post-Doctorates Workshop
This full day workshop focused on the career choices and opportunities available to female graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Topics included career development skills, discussions on R&D hiring in industry, entrepreneurial guidance, and on academia vs industry vs national labs as career paths. This session also included a seminar by COACh for scientists.
3. Women Assistant Professors: Developing Your Career
This full day workshop focused on the career development opportunities for female assistant professors. Topics included a seminar from COACh for scientists and roundtable discussions covering topics such as managing research groups, obtaining funding, establishing collaborations, networking, and preparing for tenure.

WIC Luncheon
Keynote Speaker: Cynthia Murphy-Ortega, Manager with University Partnerships and Association Relations of Chevron Corporation
At our annual networking luncheon, Cynthia spoke about her reflections on an engineering career in the energy business. Cynthia is currently a Manager with University Partnerships and Association Relations of Chevron Corporation. Her organization manages Chevron’s relationships with universities and professional societies and institutes throughout the world.
In addition, Cristina Farmus, Managing Director of ChE Purdue, introduced “Purdue ChE Pipeline Center”. Their mission is to collaborate with professional, academic and industrial partners to implement programs that enable women in chemical engineering to be successful in their careers, pursue leadership roles and make a difference in their profession.
Mentorship Excellence Award Winner
Rosanne Ford

Professor Rosanne Ford is currently a Professor of Chemical Engineering at University of Virginia. Dr. Ford has been on the faculty at UVa since 1989 and she has had a profound impact on chemical engineering undergraduate and graduate students, as well as K-12 students and the faculty at the University of Virginia. In her recommendation letter, it was stated, that “What truly impresses me about [Dr. Ford’s] impact on the next generation of chemical engineers is the depth and breadth of her activities that have been sustained over a 27-year period at UVa… Her impact is far-reaching because the example that she sets often influences her students to also make mentoring and outreach a priority in their own professional careers.”
