On June 21, members of the Knoxville/Oak Ridge Local Section took time out of their workday to staff a booth at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL) 2018 Professional Organization Day.
ORNL (Oak Ridge, TN) is the largest US Department of Energy open science laboratory. It deploys multidisciplinary and multi-institutional teams to transform fundamental research into new technologies and applications in clean energy and global security.
The ORNL Professional Organization Day provides the lab’s 4500 employees, 3200 visiting researchers, and 800 visiting students an opportunity to learn more about the various professional organizations they can join.
Visitors to the AIChE booth included ORNL employees who are chemical engineers by training but work in related fields; several asked to be on the local section newsletter distribution list. Other visitors included summer students from universities across the country who obtained information on AIChE membership and local student chapters.
It was a fun and rewarding experience for the local chapter members who manned the booth.
AIChE local sections like Knoxville/Oak Ridge host regular meetings, presentations, and networking events to support professional and technical development for ChEs. Many local sections also sponsor student programs with colleges and universities, and community activities and social events.
