Congratulations to Dr. Prodromos Daoutidis, the newly elected 2023 1st Vice Chair. Prodromos is a College of Science and Engineering Distinguished Professor, holder of the Amundson Chair, and Executive Officer in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota. He received a Diploma degree in Chemical Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, M.S.E. degrees in Chemical Engineering and Electrical Engineering: Systems from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan. He has been on the faculty at Minnesota since 1992, having served as Director of Graduate Studies in Chemical Engineering and currently serving as Director of Graduate Studies in a new M.S. degree program in Data Science for Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, which he has developed. He has also been a Humphrey Institute Policy Fellow. He is the recipient of several awards, including the AIChE Computing in Chemical Engineering Award, the PSE Model Based Innovation Prize, best paper awards from the Journal of Process Control and Computers and Chemical Engineering, an NSF Career Award, and the AIChE Ted Peterson Award. He has served as CAST Programming Chair, Program Coordinator in CAST Areas 10b and 10d, CPC VIII co-chair, and is currently Secretary of FIPSE. He is the Associate Editor for Process Systems Engineering in the AIChE Journal and an Associate Editor in the Journal of Process Control. He has co-authored 5 books and more than 310 refereed papers, and has supervised to completion 33 PhD students, 5 post-docs, and 3 visiting PhD students, 15 of whom currently hold academic positions. His current research is on control and optimization of complex and networked systems, and the design and operation of distributed systems for renewable power generation and production of fuels and chemicals. His main goals for CAST are to raise its profile within AIChE, promote initiatives and activities on data science, and increase the involvement of younger members of the division.
