Congratulations to Iiro Harjunkoski for receiving the 2024 Computing Practice Award, for actively fostering collaboration between industry and academia in complex computational topics, planning and scheduling, integration of scheduling and control, demand-side management, optimization and machine learning. Iiro Harjunkoski has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Åbo Akademi University in Turku, Finland (1997) with a very early emphasis on scheduling of production processes using mathematical optimization. He did a Postdoc at Carnegie Mellon University (1999-2001) working on planning & scheduling and constraint programming and joined ABB Corporate Research Germany in 2001. He has worked on optimization problems in various industries (pharma, chemicals, O&G, P&P, copper, steel, cement, F&B, service, power grids), including demand-side management since 2008. He was appointed as Corporate Research Fellow in 2013 and his research results have been deployed in both end-customer installations and internal products. In 2019 he moved to Hitachi Energy Research where he is Research Fellow focusing on the modeling and solution of energy-related complex optimization problems often containing discrete decision variables and explores novel approaches to tackle these. He holds an adjunct professorship in Process Systems Engineering at Aalto University (Finland) since 2016. He is actively collaborating with universities and is a frequent member of scientific committees of international conferences. He has authored / co-authored more than 160 scientific journal- and conference papers.
