An edible security tag could be used to identify counterfeit drugs
Counterfeit medications are a growing concern, and the Drug Enforcement Administration found that manufacturing drugs with distinct markings or packaging is not enough to prevent the problem. Researchers at Purdue University have created an edible security tag to embed in the medication, which can then be authenticated by shining various LED light sources on the tag.
Biotech crops developed to produce better carbon-rich root systems
Speaking to delegates attending the annual Canola Industry Meeting and Canola Innovation Day in Canada, Dominique Roche of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies discussed how new breeding technologies and biotech crops are being used to improve carbon sequestration from the soil. Roche shared how institute researchers are utilizing genetic engineering to produce larger plants with better carbon-rich root systems.
FDA unveils draft, final guidances on gene therapy development
The FDA released six final guidance documents on gene therapy development covering topics such as treatments for rare disease, hemophilia and retinal disorders, investigational new drug applications, long-term follow-up after gene therapy administration, and testing retroviral vector-based therapies. The agency also unveiled a draft guidance on how to interpret the sameness of gene therapy products under the orphan drug regulations.
