Protein breakthrough shows promise for toxic cleanups
Proteins in the human body carry out many vital functions but have been impossible to sustain outside that environment. However, a team at the University of California at Berkeley has found a way to blend synthetic and natural systems to produce materials that sustain proteins outside the body and produce mats that show high promise for breaking down toxic materials that might spill into the environment.
Nanoparticles gather water contaminants to be destroyed
Rice University researchers have found a faster, more efficient way to clear pollutants from water. Their innovation involves nanoparticles of titanium dioxide embedded in a mat of polymer fibers, with the particles serving to bind contaminants that are then destroyed by exposure to ultraviolet light.
