We are happy to announce that the local East Texas AIChE Chapter will be hosting a guest speaker event at Papacita’s (Free Dinner provided!) on 6:30pm Thursday Nov 4th. This will be our first event as a local chapter and we hope you consider joining us at this kickoff event! The guest speaker will be a Texas A&M professor, Dr. Mark Holtzapple. He is a passionate engineer who graduated from Cornell University (B.S. 1978) and the University of Pennsylvania (Ph.D. 1981) before working at the U.S. Army Natick R&D Center to develop a portable air conditioning system that soldiers could wear to prevent heat stress while wearing chemical protective clothing. In 1986, he returned to academia and became a professor of chemical engineering at Texas A&M university. His research interests include high-efficiency engines, advanced electric motors, water desalination, and fuels and chemicals from biomass. His research has also resulted in two spin-off companies that focuses on high efficiency engines and bioconversion of biomass into industrial chemicals and hydrocarbon fuels.
In this guest lecturer event, Dr. Mark Holtzapple will be presenting an engineering perspective on the topic of climate change. Climate change is a complex issue with many facets that is often lost in today’s discussions. It’s a challenge that doesn’t present any black and white solutions as any attempts to tackle climate change will always have some drawback. This is why climate change is considered one of the 14 grand engineering challenges of our lifetime. Dr. Mark Holtzapple will apply chemical engineering principles to help understand the physics of climate change and its consequences, but also engineering solutions that can potentially address it.
We hope to see you all at the event at Papacita’s on 6:30pm Thursday Nov 4th! Dinner is provided so please RSVP for us to get a headcount using the following link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cw6GJlMtQywxlFG6rD3LLKHMUDzhcOC8cRnKk6YVfz0/edit?usp=sharing
