Title: Overview of oil refineries -- Interrelationship of units and some unique perspectives (1 PDH)

Abstract

The “Grandaddy” of Chemical Engineering is Crude Oil Refineries. Contrary to popular opinion in the news media, production of products from crude oil (both fuel and chemical) continues to be at a large volume. A typical high complexity refinery requires over 300,000 drawings for design and documentation. This presentation will offer an overview of the major units and how feed and product streams (intermediate and finished) interrelate. One of the perspectives rarely talked about is following the hydrogen streams (needs and producers). An extensive list of sulfur recovery facilities will be covered (some of which most have never heard of). Also, a personal perspective will be provided of “cutting coke” in a Coker at age 19.
