James McCreary, South Coast Air Quality Management, Los Angeles, California

Biography: James McCreary is a recent graduate from Rice University's Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering program. Since graduating, he has co-founded several ventures including a chemical engineering R&D and nature-based farm and garden products firm. He also served on the board of the AIChE Dallas chapter. A passionate environmentalist, he joined with the South Coast Air Quality Management District in Los Angeles to tackle regulation of the country's most polluted air. James currently resides in Los Angeles where he enjoys managing faith-based businesses, serving the community and church, and training for triathlons.

Abstract: Air pollution is a global challenge, but how does regulation address this at the local and regional levels? In this presentation, James walks through what a rule writer's work involves and how the specific regulations they craft can help shape an industry. This presentation will cover the overall rule writing process and provide a case study in the metal melting and metal heating industry; a mainstay component of the powerhouse that is the Los Angeles manufacturing sector.
