Topic: The Skinny on Skin Products
The skin is the largest organ in the human body with thousands of products designed for the treatment of a multitude of conditions. With the high number of options and the strong influence of social media, this can cause much misunderstanding and confusion, particularly when reading a cosmetic label. In this presentation, we will discuss in detail, the terms “clean/natural/green,” “dermatologist recommended,” and “fragrance free.” We will also present a case study involving the raw material propylene glycol (PG) which is one of the most widely used ingredients in fragrances, personal care and pharmaceutical products. PG has been used for over a century, but in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries, this raw material is viewed very differently. We will explore and try to explain these different perceptions of PG across these industries.
