The concept of Brownfield development is commonplace in New Jersey and the redevelopment of these underutilized often contaminated sites has resulted in the establishment of warehousing, shopping malls, condominiums and golf courses. However the conversion of Brownfields into greenfields is substantially less common. Greenfield development is typically related to the conversion of brownfield sites to open space, for the purposes of conservation, wildlife enhancement, and/or public recreation and tends to occur far less frequently. However, in a world where terms such as green infrastructure and coastal resiliency are somewhat common, the conversion of brownfields or portions thereof to greenfields could be an important element of a project. The incorporation of habitat restoration elements into brownfield sites is sometimes not feasible but more often simply not considered because it is not required. However, the incorporation of Greenfield project elements may be invaluable to gaining project approval, increasing coastal resiliency, attenuating project costs and in some cases generating profits. The objective of the presentation is to share examples of various types of habitat restoration projects that have played an important role in the development, design and ultimate approval of various Brownfield projects in New Jersey.
As a founding partner of Princeton Hydro, Mark is responsible for wetland and terrestrial ecological oriented projects. In this area he oversees a broad variety of environmental activities, primarily those involving wetlands and wildlife habitat elements. He holds a BS in Biology form Moravian College and MS in Ecology from Rutgers University. Mr. Gallagher has over 25 years of experience in environmental consulting much of which has been devoted to habitat restoration. Additionally, he is a professor in the Landscape Ecology Program of Temple University.
Currently, Mr. Gallagher is involved in several wetland and habitat restoration projects including the restoration of an urban floodplain wetland in Bloomfield New Jersey and a landfill in Howard Beach, NY. His natural design experiences have also been applied toward the integration of natural design elements into stormwater management facilities. It is, however, the restoration of highly degraded landscapes such as those we will discuss on June 27th that he finds most interesting. http://www.princetonhydro.com/
