Synopsis of Presentation:

Dr. Desmond (Des) King, Chevron Oronite president and a past president of IChemE, will talk about the concept of the Water-Energy-Food Nexus and discuss some of implications for the global population.  He will use case studies from around the world to highlight some of the opportunities and challenges facing chemical engineers.

Des King joined Chevron in 1981 as a process engineer and progressed through a series of technical positions in Chevron Research Company.  From 1994 to 2001 King served in a variety of leadership positions, including technical manager at the Burnaby refinery, general manager of Alberta Envirofuels in Edmonton and managing director of Technology Marketing for Chevron Downstream.  He was named general manager of Corporate Strategic Planning from 2001 to 2004, followed by an assignment as general manager of Chevron’s refinery in Pembroke, Wales.

From 2006 to 2009, King served as managing director and CEO of the publicly listed Caltex Australia Ltd, the leading oil refiner, fuel marketer and convenience store operator in Australia. He was a director of the Australian Institute of Petroleum and a member of the Business Council of Australia.  In 2009, King was named President of Chevron Technology Ventures (CTV), a division of Chevron that champions innovation, commercialization and integration of emerging technologies and related new business models within the corporation. Des was named in his current position in September, 2013. Chevron Oronite is Chevron’s specialty chemicals business that develops, manufactures and markets additives for fuels (including Techron) and lubricating oils globally.

Des received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London, in 1976 and a doctorate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Cambridge in 1979.  Des is a fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and a Chartered Engineer.  He was the President of IChemE for 2010-2011.
