Ethics and Values in Design
This webinar will explore recent research in the area of Ethics and Values in Design (E+VID), borrowing liberally from a recent review published by Donia and Shaw in Science and Engineering Ethics. Donia and Shaw identified 18 (yes, 18) frameworks for understanding E+VID, but identified two themes, “designer agency” and “normative strength,” that can be used to understand the various E+VID frameworks. The focus of the webinar will be on how the E+VID approaches and organizing themes apply to Chemical Engineering practice and the relationship between these approaches and the AIChE Code of Ethics.
Dr. Stephen Thiel is a Professor-Educator in the Chemical Engineering program at the University of Cincinnati (UC). He earned his BS in CHE from Virginia Tech and his graduate degrees from The University of Texas at Austin; he is a licensed Professional Engineer in Ohio. He has worked over 20 years in academia and 13 years in industry with Henkel/Cognis Corporation. He currently teaches senior CHE design at UC.
