Presentation Abstract

"Pollutant Source Control for the Lower Duwamish Waterway"

The Lower Duwamish Waterway (LDW) once meandered through the Duwamish mud flats to find its way to Puget Sound. Today the LDW is an important industrial and recreational transport route. However, the LDW was added to the Superfund National Priorities List in 2001 because of chemical contaminants in its sediments.

Ecology and Environment Inc. is one of two consultants working with the Washington State Department of Ecology to develop Source Control Action Plans (SCAPs) for the LDW. These plans help to identify the complex sources of contamination and prioritize the actions necessary to keep sediments from being contaminated again after cleanup.

This presentation describes the ongoing Source Control work and gives examples of contaminants that continue to threaten LDW sediments.
