ABSTRACT: Molecular data science, or the application of data science methods to molecular systems, is currently undergoing a revolution as the rate of experimental data generation explodes due to automation and other methodological advances and our ability to run high throughput simulations, both classical and quantum, on supercomputing resources expands as well. This talk will discuss the foundations of molecular data science and the strategy at the University of Washington for education in this space. In addition the talk will close with examples of cutting edge applications with an eye towards energy, environment and health.
SPEAKER BIO: Dr. David Beck is the Director of Research and Education for the eScience Institute, the University of Washington’s data science institute, and Research Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering. While his origins are in Computer Science, he holds a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry / Biomolecular Structure and Design from the University of Washington. Dr. Beck’s research interests lie at the intersection of molecular data science with applications in energy, environment and health and best-practices for data science education in multidisciplinary settings including the arts, engineering, humanities and science.
