Workshop Forward:

Steam is a high energy input to the petroleum refinery process, to drive equipment, to heat process streams and in the process. The thermodynamic properties of water, the ability to infinitely recycle steam condensate and unique water chemical properties make water steam cycle an efficient energy system. Steam production involves high cost due to the elaborate pretreatment required to achieve required boiler feed water (BFW) quality. High percentage of condensate return (>75%) is the industry norm, due to the high energy input to produce steam and the high quality of steam condensate. The main energy saving strategy in steam generation system is to optimize by: 1.Improving thermal efficiency – optimum fuel firing 2.maintaining boiler drum blow down to the minimum permissible limit to increase steam production & reduce water and energy losses &3. Recovering flash steam & heat from the drum blow down streams. These techniques involve installation costs of flash drum and heat exchangers. However the operating costs are extremely low and the total cost pays back in a short time. In addition the lower water drainage rates have a positive impact on environment and reduce load on WWTP.

The workshop aims to capture these aspects by way of exercises to evaluate the best suitable energy recovery strategies & the pay back in an existing steam generation system in a petroleum refinery. The second exercise is to utilize the concepts to make a simple design of a small auxiliary boiler system considered to be built on capital cost.
