Don McAlister will present a talk titled “Sulfuric Acid Heat Recovery System (HRS). This will provide a summary of energy recovery work in sulfuric plants culminating in a discussion of a novel process for recovering energy from cooling high temperature sulfuric acid. Discussion of the HRS process will cover details from inception and lab work to pilot studies and commercialization.
The program will cover the following topics:
- History
- Sulfuric process review
- Energy recovery from sulfuric plants
- HRS discovery process
- Literature corrosion data
- Lab corrosion test procedures & data
- Pilot plant tests
- HRS commercialization
Don McAlister Biographical Information
Don’s experience with Detrex Chemical Industries involved chlorine, caustic and chlorinated organics. Don joined Monsanto Enviro-Chem Systems in 1973 as a Senior Process Engineer and was with them for 26 years.
Monsanto was involved in research on sulfur dioxide oxidation catalyst for many years, but there was no research and development on the sulfuric acid side. Don had been with Enviro-Chem about 2½ years when he became a charter member of a new group created to look at sulfuric acid process improvements. He attributes his selection to asking “Why do we do it that way.” too many times. For 12 years, he was manager of that Technology group, and he continues to consult with MECS.
Don has authored a number of papers and is the inventor or co-inventor on 13 US patents. He has been an AIChE member for more than 55 years.
