Learning Safe Work Practices from Major Newsworthy Incidents

One of challenges of conducing monthly safety training is to make the lessons learned interesting to every attendee from accounting clerk to shift supervisor.  After several months of poorly received lessons learned training using in-house incidents, I noticed that the incidents that were covered by the media were being discussed in break rooms and during lunch.  Often, I would be asked to explain the “findings” that were published in the local papers or showed up on TV especially when the findings were extracted from a federal agency press release or report. 

I decided to use this interest in media covered incidents to show how these incidents related to plant or personal activities and how to apply one or more recommendation to their specific situation.

Speakers Bio:

Ms.  Laura Gimpelson, P. E. is President of LG Environmental Engineering, an engineering firm specializing in the design and implementation of environmental and safety compliance programs and sustainable assessment and remediation plans. 

She is a life member and Fellow of AICHE and SWE and a voting member of ASTM.  Ms.  Gimpelson has been honored with two AIChE Gary Leach Leadership Awards, the Distinguished Service Award from AICHE and SWE local sections and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the 2010 Central Florida Engineers Week.
