This talk will provide an overview of the chemistry and history of natural and synthetic sources of inorganic and organic blue pigments through the ages highlighting pigments with interesting back-stories. Egyptian blue: from the first synthetic blue to potential biotech and other analytic applications. Ultramarine blue: from the precious blue mineral to cheap synthetic alternative. To our understanding of the source of the blue color. Indigo: from plant based organic dye and pigment to synthetic alternatives and the Nobel Prize. Prussian blue: from alchemy to the first modern synthetic blue. Phthalocyanine blue: from industrial contaminant to commercial pigments in a decade. YMnIn: From material research to Crayola crayon.
