The WISE program was founded in 1980 through a collaboration of several professional engineering societies. The internship’s objective is to prepare students as future leaders of the engineering profession who contribute to the development of public policy in the United States regarding important issues of science and technology.
Each year, outstanding engineering students are selected to spend nine weeks in a special summer program in Washington D.C. where they learn how government officials make decisions on complex technological issues and how engineers can contribute to legislative and regulatory policy decisions.
The interns independently research and write a public policy paper on a topical engineering-related issue that is important to their sponsoring society. The public policy paper defines an important current issue for policymakers, provides an in-depth analysis of the issue, and makes comprehensive recommendations supported by solid findings to fix the issue. The culmination of the internship ends with the students presenting their papers on Capitol Hill to an audience that includes members from the sponsoring societies and invited guests from legislature.
PAIC coordinates AIChE’s participation in the WISE program, which is ranked one of the best internship opportunities in the U.S. by the Princeton Review. For more information please visit: www.wise-intern.org
