We have built barriers for cesium ion and for carbon tetrachloride which can retard leaks out of landfills by over three hundred times. The barriers for cesium ion contain 50 µm particles of crystalline silicon titanate (CST) which selectively adsorb the cesium. The barriers for carbon tetrachloride contain 20 nm iron particles melt blended into polyethylene. The particles react with diffusing CCl4. In both cases, the barriers eventually do leak at close to the normal rate once the CST or the iron is consumed. The results support theories which predict the effect of other reactive barriers.
