This session addresses the hierarchical nature of the interface between synthetic materials and biological systems. Talks in this sessions will address "bottoms-up" strategies for the design and synthesis of biomaterials: that is, strategies that start from molecular engineering and assembly of synthetic surfaces, move to the attachment and assembly of proteins, and finally to the directed adhesion and function of living cells and tissues.
