The ability to detect biomarkers in human serum is an important diagnostic tool for cancer identification. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a biomarker whose levels become elevated in patients with colon cancer. Elevation of the biomarker level in human serum creates a corresponding increase in the autoantibody level in human serum. The quantitative detection of the CEA autoantibody in serum is one method that could be used to diagnose colon cancer in patients. Using a surface plasmon resonance biosensor, nine human serum samples were screened. Four were from patients known to have colon cancer, while the other five were from healthy individuals. Results show that by comparing the sensor response from the serum samples, patient samples can reliably be distinguished from non-patient samples.
