Systems biotechnology involves understanding the control and cellular dynamics of multiple genes/proteins/small molecules. Typically, a systems biology study involves global measurements on changes in gene, protein or metabolite concentrations in response to environmental or genetic perturbation. The forefront of this research area combines several of these techniques with mathematical modeling to uncover the features leading to phenotypes such as sensitivity or robustness. Possible topics include analysis of intracellular signal transduction, metabolic pathways, cell cycle, circadian rhythms, quorum sensing. Biological systems from single cell microbes to mammalian tissues will be considered.
