With the hydrogen economy starting to make advances and expansions, the storage of hydrogen remains with necessary improvements. Several types of media such as metal hydrides and metal decorated carbon structures have been studied as possible adsorption media. Metal doped carbon nanotubes have even been studied intensely recently. Segmented or bamboo-structured CNTs, however, show much more potential than regular CNTs. This study includes an examination of different types of surface modifications and their effects on the hydrogen uptake. Through various treatments, more surface areas of the segmented nanotubes are expected to be available for hydrogen adsorption with an increased storage capacity.
