The surface of nanopores in self-assembled opal membranes was modified with poly-L-alanine using graft-polymerization. The polymer length was controlled by polymerization time and was monitored by measuring the flux of redox species across the opal film using cyclic voltammetry. Transport selectivity through these polypeptide modified membranes can be controlled through various environmental stimuli including change in pH.
